"Róng" in Chinese means melting and fusion, and that is the core of the philosophy. 17 designers from different design fields — product, furniture, fashion, jewelry, textile, porcelain, photography and graphic design — deconstructed the traditional craft of Hangzhou and apply them in contemporary design. The material of 2014 was silk.

I am attracted to the beauty of unfinished products: the traces of a needle on an unfinished embroidery painting, a silkworm moth emerging from its cocoon before the silk yarn spinning process is complete... moments that normally cannot be perceived when examining the finished products. With a purpose of being “full” and “smooth”, traditional silk embroidery paintings intend to hide the stitching trace. But in my design, silk embroidery is a material that can be used to create a contrast with transparency and opacity. Different stitching techniques can create new textile surfaces. The moth has been stitched in to the silk with this concept in mind and has been kept transparent to the resin. In this way “semi-finished” moments become eternal.

Semi-finished The Moth

In the course of creating its own cocoon, silkworms form unique winding filaments of silk, forging a process that represents the evolution of life and birth. The "Love Link - hatch" is wrapped with a silk thread so as to imitate and reproduce this process, wound and wrapped to emulate life emerging from the inside out.

Silk is an amazing material. It all begins with a worm that makes a cozy home for itself, wrapping silk yarn around it in many directions to create a cocoon. The inspiration behind the Silk Cabinet is to recreate the same process by wrapping the frame with Tian Can Duan silk in different directions to create a cabinet. Stretching and pulling the soft silk layers around the frame until the surface loses its transparency and becomes opaque.

Materials: Qingshui Silky Cotton/Wood/Steel Wire/Direct Current FanSize: 358*273*70MM (large)/297*215*70MM(small)The designer has used water silk to make an air purifier, which can be used as aromatherapy with essential oils as well. The work process is like taking a deep breath, expressing respect for life.

Materials: Rod metal frame covered with Indian silk&nbsp;Dimensions:2x1.3 meters&nbsp;Cloud is a project that aims to express the lightness and high capacity to screen the light, creating a special character in the silk. The design reminds one of a group of clouds in the sky, which float freely and caress each other. A set of pieces to position liberally in the wall, each element has its own shape and is covered with silk to screen the light which emerges from behind.

Materials: silk, iron, PET, paperDesigners use composite materials to harden the soft silk, &nbsp;and cut it in a streamline pattern. The lamp keeps the breezy feeling and can be easily assembled.

Breeze

Material: 100% silk (noil silk)Size: 3 of GarmentThe inspiration of “Xu” comes from a Chinese idiom-lifelike. From On the Equality of Things, by Chuang-Tzu. It describes the lively appearance, indicating that the artistic image is vivid and alive. It only pays attention to the natural expression of design, regardless of what gorgeous design skills are used, in order to determine what is aesthetically pleasing from another angle. It is the feelings of the designer about the process that lead to change in the public’s perception.

Materials: Hangzhou lenoDimension: Breasted straight collar shirt from Jiangsu, De An Zhou Shi tombsThis design concept of a breasted straight collar shirt was found in Jiangsu, De An Zhou Shi tombs. Women used to wear breasted straight collar shirt made by very soft and light chiffon, which shows off her beauty quite well.

Song-Gown 

Material: Mulberry silkSize: 40cmX60cmX60cmSilk is a very light and natural material. Traditional Chinese papermaking can be applied to make the lamp, exuding a misty, peaceful, zen-like feeling.

Materials: Ceramic, woodSize: W：25 L: 37I work with ceramic material to re-create the round fan. I hope to apply the translucency of silk to ceramic material in order to enrich the language of expression.

Round Fan

Materials：Silk&nbsp;Dimension：plate 35 x 5, bowl 20 x 7, vase 40 x 25&nbsp;映 Shine is a tableware collection that includes a plate, a bowl, and a vase. The concept behind Shine is to illustrate the unique natural qualities of silk by taking a traditional craft and applying it in an unconventional but effective way. Silk, in its natural condition, contains sericin (which acts like glue) that enables the forms to solidify without the addition of another material or supporting framework. At the same time, the final surface expresses the unique shine of silk. As an additional characteristic, the plate can be folded and rolled in one direction due to the consistency of silk fibers. All pieces are handcrafted by following the traditional method of harvesting silk. They are basically formed by one single silk thread, which is obtained directly from silk cocoons. Shine is a tribute to the silkworms who build their solid transformation cases in a similar manner.

Materials:&nbsp; Upper Material: 100% reeled raw silk&nbsp; Sole: Mulberry Paper&nbsp; Heel: 100% AcrylDimensions: max. 22cm x 8cm x 15cm&nbsp;The once hard cocoon is softened through boiling water and releases a single silk filament. By winding the silk strand and shaping the direction of its path, multiple design options in shoe design can be explored. The silk thread remains in place due to its natural glue that will harden after it comes in to contact with air. The name “Léi Zǔ” refers to the Chinese legendary empress, who invented the silk reel.

Materials: 100% reeled silk&nbsp; Dimensions: 150cm x 400 cm&nbsp;Looking at sericulture and the brutal path a moth goes through, the concept is demonstrates how many cocoons are actually needed to create a textile. In this fabric the weft yarn is composed of 50 cocoons. Each square in the fabric finally represents the 50 moths that were boiled alive.&nbsp;&nbsp;Materials: 100% hand spun silk from silk floss&nbsp; Dimensions: 60cm x 120 cm&nbsp;There is no use for a defective cocoon in the production of high quality silk reeling. In this textile a hatched cocoon is still worth its silk – perhaps even more, because the moth could reproduce and lay eggs, which represent the full circle of life. The beads in the fabric are markers to display the individual length of each cocoon. All beads represent the amount of eggs one moth is able to lay.&nbsp;

The biggest difference between oriental clothing and western clothing is, the previous one puts in evidence the beauty of human body, but the latter one puts the importance on human gesture. Garments cannot fit perfectly with the body, and the loose part moves following the gesture, that’s the beauty of oriental clothing. This two blouses follows Chinese traditional pattern-make, flat and built by geometric forms. Got inspirations from unfinished silk embroidery painting, embroidery is used as a textile treatment technique, and creates transparency &amp; no transparency contrast on silk fabric. That’s also a return of original function of silk embroidery.&nbsp;

Materials: thread of silkSizes: big one：30cm x 24cm x 50cm；little one：8cm x 8cm x 20cm&nbsp;A silkworm makes its home in almost the same fashion as it makes its cocoon. The cocoon, which is the house of the silkworm, is just like the house of a human. I blended the two forms of the house to make a human silk room.
