Studio Sebastian Marbacher

The projects of Switzerland based studio sebastian marbacher shifts between the fields of product design, interior design and spatial installations.Since five years Sebastian Marbacher has been working on self-initiated projects and collaborated with commercial clients and institutions such as Artsy,Freitag lab,Google Switzerland,Kunst Halle Sankt Gallen and Teater Nordkraft in Denmark. The work has been shown in several exhibitions. In particular at Fisher Parrish Gallery in New York,Museo de Arte Moderno in Mexico,Depot Basel and Shenzhen Creative Week.in the year of 2017 Marbacher's work was awarded with the Swiss Design Award.

My visit at the Design Library in Hangzhouln in early 2017 was very inspiring.I got to know the people running the Library.I appreciate them and what they do a lot.
The Rong Design Library was also where I got introduced to the work of Chinese sculptor Fu Zhongwang.I was totally struck by the strength and simplicity of his work. The way he joints rough pieces of wood with very accurate carved mortise and tenon wood joints fascinated me.
Where I come from, especially in the mountain regions of Switzerland we have an old tradition in making furniture out of tree trunks.often very low tech, just using the material as it is available.I am interested in these objects. My intention was to make a contemporary design based on that.Another aspect I would like to mention is my relation to the woods.Spending time in the forest makes me feel entirely contented since I can remember. The smell, the sounds, the light in all four seasons,is just magic to me.This is one of the reasons for my affinity to work with massive blocks of wood."

Beam Bench

Materials:Oiled cedar wood and lava stone
Dimension:1500x480x440 mm

Wood and stone combined in one object.A precisely machined lava slab wedged into a solid beam.Inspired by the works of Chinese artist Fu Zhongwang.I tried to see the joint not from a technical but from a sculptural perspective. With focus on the contrast of hard and soft materials as well as structure and proportion.I would say that this work is a lot about balance. much like the philosophy of yin and yang. The lava stone comes from Clermont-Ferrand. France and the cedar wood from Switzerland. Both materials are ascribed special energies.
